One of The Greatest
In October 2019, the world's top professional golfers arrived in Japan to play in the ZOZO CHAMPIONSHIP, the first official PGA TOUR event to ever be hosted in Japan. In an unforgettable inaugural event, Tiger Woods became the championship's first winner defeating hometown hero Hideki Matsuyama by 3 strokes, finishing -19 under par for the week. Along with the historic win, Tiger also matched the great Sam Snead's all-time winning record of 82 professional wins. In 2020, due to the influence of the novel coronavirus, the venue was changed to Sherwood Country Club in California, USA, and was held without any spectators. Defending champion Tiger Woods, golf legend Phil Mickelson, and many other world-class players had a hard-fought battle with Patrick Cantlay ultimately rising to the top beating Jon Rahm and Justin Thomas by 1 stroke in an unforgettable come-from-behind victory. Cantlay's brilliant finish was the start of a career-defining season where he was also crowned the 2020-2021 FEDEX CUP Champion and voted the PGA TOUR Player of the Year. In 2021, ZOZO CHAMPIONSHIP finally returned back to Japan for the first time in two years. With the sting of 2019 certainly still fresh in his mind, Hideki Matsuyama played flawlessly over 4 days to avenge his previous 2nd place finish to Tiger, sinking a 10 ft eagle putt on 18 to win the 2021 championship by 5 strokes. The thrilling win sent tsunami-like waves across Japan closing the curtain on what was already a magical season where Hideki also became the first Japanese player to win the Masters.
